Many questions have been asked about how Pune and the citizens of our city will benefit from the Youth games to be held here. But not many know the extent of development and prosperity the games are bringing to our city, and the opportunities the games offer to the youth of the city.

Mr. Kalmadi had a dream. To bring the Commonwealth Youth Games to India, and then to Pune, thus putting our city on a prominent position on the world map. Pune has a reputation of being a pensioner’s paradise, a city for students. But the games now add a new dimension to pune’s personality- one as a tourist destination!

Everyone has a strong opinion about the condition of roads in Pune and all the construction that’s taking place. But you can be assured that the flyovers and roads under construction will be worth all the inconvenience in the short term. The JNNURM has allotted a large amount of funds for the road development in view of the upcoming games which will help us all for years to come!

The main initiative of the Youth Games is to make sure that the games are environment friendly. So, they are called the ‘GREEN GAMES’! Keeping this objective in mind, many private companies have been hired and assigned a part of the city for beautification. This includes mass tree plantation drives, widening of the roads and ensuring cleanliness in their areas. Also, the CYG team had recently organized a ‘Clean the River’ drive which involved a large number of Pune-ites.

The first Youth games, held in Scotland, had only 14 countries participating. The 2nd one, held in Australia had 24. Our Youth Games are the FIRST ones that are involving ALL the 71 countries of the Commonwealth! We are going to be hosts to over 1000 athletes, who will be participating in 9 different disciplines. And the incredible part is that ALL the events are going to be held at ONE place- The Shiv Chhatrapati Shivaji Sports Complex, Balewadi. The games are the first event to be held there since the National Games in the 90’s. The complex is being completely refurbished and done up for the games. It is also going to be used by World Class sportsmen for practice events before the Commonwealth Games 2010, to be held in New Delhi.

Also, it is a privilege for any city to host an event of such magnitude and Puneites should feel very proud to be living in such a wonderful city !
