Pune will host the Commonwealth Youth Games 2008 (CYG 2008) from October 12 -18. The 1st Commonwealth Youth Games were held in Edinburgh, Scotland with participation from 14 countries while the 2nd edition of the Games held at Bendigo, Australia saw participation of 24 countries. It is for the first time in history that the Commonwealth Youth Games are being held in Asia. All 71 nations and territories of the Commonwealth have confirmed their participation, indicating an unprecedented interest in India in the CYG 2008. More than 2000 athletes and officials will compete in 9 disciplines (Athletics, Badminton, Boxing, Shooting, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, Weightlifting & Wrestling). It is also for the first time that all competition, venues and Athlete’s village will be housed in one single complex that is Shri Shiv Chhatrapati Sport Complex Balewadi Pune.
Who is a Volunteer?
  1. A volunteer is defined as one who commits his/her time and energy for the benefit of others, and does so freely, through personal choice, and without expectation of a financial reward.
  2. World over, international sports events rely on Volunteers who are an integral and essential component for the success of any world class games, as they selflessly go about doing their duties, and promote the image of their country to a global audience.
  3. They are often known as the ‘Face’ of the Games and the ‘Back bone” of the Organizing Committee, for, without their unselfish and ‘we can do it’ attitude, it will be difficult to conduct a successful event.
Why Should I Volunteer?
  1. Volunteering for these Games will be a positive and rewarding experience.
  2. This will be your chance to help promote Pune and India to a global audience and to forge lasting friendships with fellow Volunteers and people from all over the world.
  3. You will gain invaluable skills and experience.
  4. You will, quite simply, give something back to your community.
  5. Being a Games Volunteer is an experience that you will remember with pride for the rest of your life.

What Do I need to be a Volunteer (Male/Female)?
He/she should:
  1. Be 18 years complete on or before 10 April 2008.
  2. Be willing to work continuously 8-10 hours daily for a minimum of 20 days i.e. 5th October 2008 – 25th October 2008. Be willing to work in assigned shifts.
  3. Be available for a 15 minute selection interview in between March 15 and April 30. If selected be available for general and role-specific training sessions (total duration 10 hours spread over 2-3 days) in July - August 2008, as per schedule assigned to you.
  4. Agree to a security check by Police followed by accreditation.
  5. Agree to wear the official volunteer uniform and accreditation pass.
  6. Speak and understand English, Marathi and Hindi.
  7. Be presentable, flexible, adaptable and hardworking with a positive “can & will do” attitude.
  8. Work hand in hand with peers.
  9. Be the ‘smiling, helpful face of the Games’.
  10. Be proud of your city and country, and consider it an honour to be part of the Youth Games.
Steps for Volunteering
Read the Information Guide and Code of Conduct carefully.
  1. Complete the on-line Team Pune - Volunteer Registration Form of CYG Pune 2008 available on on the ‘Volunteer Programme’ link.
  2. If your Application is accepted, you will be called for an interview by E-mail. (Please indicate correctly your e-mail ID on the Form). Please keep checking your Email. Telephone calls will not be entertained.
  3. If selected, you will undergo a background security check by the Police.
  4. If selected you will be assigned to a training programme in July 2008 (General and area-specific).
  5. If you complete the entire training session and show your keenness to be part of Team Pune; you will be a proud owner of the CYG Pune 2008 Team Pune uniform and Volunteer accreditation card.
Volunteer roles, Duration and Timings
  1. Volunteer roles are varied - some will extend for up to several weeks before the Games whilst others may last through the duration of the Games. The length of your involvement will depend on your assigned role.
  2. You have the opportunity to indicate your availability within the Application Form and we will discuss this with you further during the interview process.
  3. The longer and more flexible your availability, the more responsible roles you will be considered for.
